Exceptional worksite on the A20 motorway

For five days non-stop, round the clock, three Bomag heavy tandem rollers laboured busily on the construction of the underpass (68.20 metres long, 12 metres wide and 4.85 metres high) which will connect the Limoges North Industrial Estate to the future 40-hectare La Grande Pièce business park.

The operation required the A20 motorway to be closed for several days at the end of September to cut right across the full width of the dual carriageway, extract the materials, install the concrete tunnel by slewing, back-filling and finally the reconstruction work (resurfacing, marking, reinstallation of the safety rails) before opening the motorway once again to traffic.
The extremely tight schedule called for the use of reliable, multi-purpose machines. Eurovia opted for 2 Bomag BW 174 AP AM heavy tandem rollers and the new BW 206 AD-5 AM roller specifically dedicated to major road works with an operating width of 2.13 metres. For this new roller, it was the first time on a worksite in France since its launch at Intermat 2015.

The challenge was first and foremost to meet the deadlines, but also to cope with the different kinds of terrain encountered. For backfilling the construction, rebuilding the carriageway and installing the bottom layer, then the base course (2x12cm thick) and finally the wear course (6cm thick), the workers were able to rely on three machines equipped with the ASPHALT MANAGER 2 smart compaction system for automatic control of the compaction and progressive regulation of the amplitude. With their combination of power and gentleness, according to the types of layers and bases (old carriageways, backfill, the concrete structure over the tunnel), these machines ensured the success of this extremely demanding worksite.
